When children have yet to start communicating at appropriate age, parents tend to have plenty of queries about their child's language issue. According to Dr. Kummer (ASHA Leader), “There is no evidence in the literature that ankyloglossia (tongue-tied) typically causes speech defects. The oral cavity changes significantly in size and shape during the first 4 to 5 years of life. In return, the significance of ankyloglossia (tongue-tied) tends to decrease with oral growth.

It's common that girls generally start talking earlier than boy and they tend to produce more words than boys. However the difference is not significant. If your child's language skill is far behind his friends, it is better to consult a speech and language therapist.
